At ParrotWeb, we believe in the welfare of all parrots, and have provided a basic list of diet & an easy recipe list. There are more foods you can give but this provides a good starting point.

Safe Foods
Always Wash & Rinse (due to chances of pests, pesticides, bird dropping or other contaminates).

UnSafe Foods

Avocado Highly toxic and rapidly fatal

Rhubarb Excessively acidic and may contain remaining traces of the toxin, oxalic acid even after cooking

Olives Excessive oil/salt and if not properly prepared, may contain toxic residues remaining from the processing

Aubergine May contain slightly raised levels of solanin which may cause digestive upsets or worse with parrots

Asparagus Asparagin which gives the characteristic flavour can cause severe stomach upsets

Chocolate Theobromin is toxic to psittacines and has been associated with respiratory and cardiac problems ultimately leading to death

Caffeine Tea of coffee can eventually lead to cardiac problems and in certain cases can also lead to hyper-activity

Milk or Cream in any large quantities cannot be properly digested and can cause digestive problems with very long term, regular use

Butter because of its pure fat content and also the possibility of the same digestive problems caused by milk and cream

Uncooked Potato, Alcohol, Mushrooms, Coriander & Nutmeg

 

The best maxim to apply with the diet of any parrot is "If in doubt, don't" There is such a vast amount of good things to give your bird without having to resort to those which are, or may be questionable.

    EZ Parrot Treat Recipes

    Easy Treat
    Parrot Seed
    Peanut Butter
    Get an empty cardboard roll and cover it evenly with peanut butter. Roll it in bird seed. Add some fruits and veggies as variation

    Pinecone Treats
    Pinecones (see below)
    Peanut Butter (Organic)
    Bird Seeds, Pellets, crushed Cheerios, dried fruits all optional
    Clean the Pinecones (Put them into a baking dish and pour boiling water over them. Let them stand for 15 minutes, then drain off water and bake in a 250 oven for 30 minutes.
    Tie some thin rope (leather etc) around the top tip of the Pinecone then roll the cone in Peanut Butter. Next roll the cone in bird seeds or pellets and hang in cage.

    Honey Seed Treats for Birds
    2 cups crushed Cheerios
    2 cups crushed Pellets (Alternately use dried fruit etc.)
    2 cups mixed Bird Seeds
    1-1/4 cups Honey (adjust for consistency)
    Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl, then add the honey, stirring until mixture is wet, but not dripping. Spread out onto a baking sheet and bake at 200 degrees for about 45 minutes. Halfway through baking, score with a knife, when done, cut into pieces and store in container. 

    Sweet Treats
    2 cups Cockatiel seed
    1 Egg White
    2 tsp Honey
    Mix the ingredients in to a bowl. Grease a muffin tray. Bake in the oven for 1 hour at 120c. Allow to cool before serving.

    Treat Sticks
    Untreated fruit tree twigs (or lollipop sticks)
    Parrot Premium Seed
    Chopped Nuts (appropriate for bird)
    Pellets, Raisins & other Dried Fruit
    Egg
    Honey
    Disinfect tree twigs in 150C oven for 30 minutes. Mix dry ingredients together then mix in the egg. Press the mixture onto the twigs. Bake in the oven at 200C for 20-30 minutes until toasted. Brush honey over the treat sticks and return to the oven for a further 5 minutes. Remove stick & scraps after 3 hours.

    Minute Birdie Cakes
    1/2 cup slightly crushed Cheerios, Bran Flakes or Corn Flakes
    1/4 cup Peanut Butter
    1 Egg
    Mix all ingredients and pour into an oven safe soup bowl. Baked at 350 degrees about 10-12 minutes (until no longer gooey). Mash or slice some fresh fruit on top and serve.

     

Parrot Savory Recipes
An easy way to get bird to take dry medicines, vitamins & minerals, by adding at mixing stage.

Chicken and Mashed Potatoes Balls
3 lge Yams (Sweet Potatoes) or White Potatoes
1-2 tbs Milk
1 tsp Butter
Boneless Chicken pieces
1 small Carrot (if using white potatoes)
Mince and mash cooked, boneless chicken to make a paste. Boil Yams or potatoes (and carrot) in water until soft. Add milk and butter. Mix in mashed chicken. Roll with your hands into individual balls. Wrap each ball in plastic wrap and freeze in plastic bag.

Sweet Potato Balls
1 lge Sweet Potato (microwave until soft)
1/2 cup Raisins
1 mashed Banana
1 cup mixed fresh or frozen Vegetables
1 cup diced Apples
1&1/2 cups uncooked Oatmeal, Corn flakes or Granola Cereal.
Mix all together and add fruit or vegetable juice so it forms small balls. Freeze individually, then defrost and serve.

Pasta and Cheese for Parrots
1 cup Tri-coloured Pasta
1 cup frozen mixed Vegetables
Cheddar Cheese (grated)
Whole wheat Toast (crumbled)
Cook pasta according to package directions, then add the frozen vegetables to pot and cook until done. Drain and mix with cheese. Sprinkle with grated cheddar and toast

Beans & Rice for Parrots
1&1/2 cups mixed, dry Beans
1 cup cooked Brown Rice
1 cup cooked White Rice
1 chopped Carrot
1 chopped Celery Stalk
1 cup frozen Sweetcorn (thawed)
Soak beans overnight, drain & rinse. Fill pan with water adding beans, carrots and celery and cook for 1 hour. Add corn and rice and cook until rice is soft. Cool and serve. Separate & Freeze extra servings.

Celery Crunch
Green leafy vegetables (lettuce, kale, spinach leaves)
1/4 cup of Puffed Rice
1/4 cup cornflakes
3-4 tbs Honey
1/8 cup minced Celery
15 Nuts (optional)
Add rice, cornflakes, honey and nuts mix well until moist but not dripping. Knead into small balls and wrap 2 leaves around mixture The leaves are to make introducing fresh vegetables easier.

Pasta Omelette
2 cups Pasta
2 Eggs
Oil for pan
Seed to garnish
Cook pasta until soft. Beat eggs & fry in a pan. When eggs start to cook, add pasta and fold. Continue cooking until eggs are cooked thoroughly. Serve warm (not hot), and finish with a sprinkling of seed.

Bird Egg Food
2 hard boiled Eggs
1/2 cup crushed Cheerios
1 slice whole wheat Toast
Boil egg until hard and mash well, crush the eggshell with the back of a spoon until almost a powder. Crumble the toast and crush cereal then mix everything together.

Sweet Potato French Toast for Parrots
1/2 jar of Sweet Potato baby food
4 slice of whole wheat Bread
2 Eggs
Oil for pan
Millet Seed
Mix eggs and baby food together, then dip the bread into the mixture and cook both sides in a frying pan. Cut the bread into small pieces and sprinkle with millet seed.

Cheese Muffins for Birds
1 cup whole wheat Flour
1 cup white flour
1&1/2 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Salt
1/2 cup shredded Cheddar
2 Eggs with shells
1/2 cup melted Butter
1/2 cup Sugar
1/2 cup chopped Apples
1/2 cup shredded Carrots
Mix the first 6 ingredients together in a bowl. Crush eggshells until powder and then beat shells and eggs together. Add butter, sugar, apple and carrot to the eggs and mix well. Stir together with the dry ingredients until combined. Spoon into muffin cases and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes (or until a toothpick inserted into the center of each muffin comes out clean)

Homemade Parrot Muffins
2 cups Cornflour
2 cups whole wheat Flour
1 tbs Baking Powder
3 Eggs with shell (washed & blended in processor)
2 jars Sweet Potato baby food
1 whole mashed Banana
2 cups strained vegetable baby food
4 tbs Peanut Butter
1/2 cup chopped mixed Nuts
2 jars of diced Apple baby food (alternately, mashed favorite fruit)
Mix together, put into muffin cases and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes (or until a toothpick inserted into the center of each muffin comes out clean)

Savory Bird Muffins
1/2 cup mixed Vegetables
1 pk Multigrain Bread Mix
1 cup cooked Rice
1/4 cup Seed or Millet mixture
Cook the vegetables and rice, whilst preparing the bread mix (according to the box). Stir together cooked vegetables and rice with the bread mix. Preheat oven to 325 degrees and bake as directed.

 

Parrot (Birdy) Bread

THE BASICS
1Pk Multigrain Bread Mix
Plain yogurt
2 Eggs
2 small jars baby food Sweet Potato or Carrots (to replace the liquid)
THE ADDITIONS - Savory
Watercress
Grated Sweet Potatoes
Grated Carrots
Finely chopped Broccoli and Broccoli Leaves
Finely chopped Kale
Finely chopped Mustard Greens (spicy)
Finely chopped Dandelion Greens (bitter)
Toasted Sesame Seeds
Toasted Poppy Seeds
Garbanzo (Chick Peas) Beans
Sweet Corn
Peas
Chopped Bell Pepper
Chopped Jalapenos
Grated Butternut Squash
Pumpkin
THE ADDITIONS - Sweet

Decide on savory or sweet, prepare with the one egg and jar of baby food, then:- Add two or three or four additions from the appropriate list Cook and cool. You may have to cook at a lower temperature, say about 350 degrees, for longer than the pack indicates if you make very moist additions. Serve what you need & freeze the remainder.
 

Parrot Sweet Recipes

Nutty Cookies
Wholegrain Flour
1 tbs Olive Oil
1 or 2 Eggs
1/2 cup Nuts (flaked Almonds, chopped Walnuts etc.)
Premium Parrot Seed
Mix all together to make a firm dough (add flour accordingly). Shape into small cookies, and bake for about 12 minutes until very lightly golden brown. Allow to cool, and store in the fridge.

Parrot Jelly
1pk Organic Plain Gelatine
Parrots Favorite Goodies (Seed Carrot, Honey Bananas etc.)
Prepare a small packet of organic plain gelatine as directed on package. Mix in some millet seeds, peanut butter, honey, bananas and carrots until desired consistency.

Parrot Fruit Sorbet
1 cup Strawberries
1 peeled, cored and chopped Apple
1 peeled Orange with seeds removed
1 peeled Banana
Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until pureed. Spoon into ice cube trays and freeze. Serve frozen fruit cubes to your bird as a treat on a hot day.

Frozen Yogurt for Birds
1 lge Organic Vanilla Yogurt
1 cup mashed Fruit
2 tbs Peanut Butter
2 tbs Honey
Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until pureed. Spoon into ice cube trays and freeze. Serve frozen fruit cubes to your bird as a treat on a hot day.

Parroty Birthday Cake
2 cups enriched White Flour
3&1/2 tsp Baking Powder
1&1/2 cups Sugar
1/2 cup soft Butter
3/4 cup chopped Apples
3/4 cup minced Raisins, other Dried Fruit or Nuts
3 Eggs with shells
3/4 cup Milk
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
Cinnamon and Sugar
Heat oven to 350. Grease and flour 8"-9" baking pan. Mash eggshells with back of spoon until powder. Combine all ingredients in mixing bowl. Beat 3 minutes on high. Gently stir in fruit and nuts. Sprinkle with a mixture of 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Pour into pan and bake for 40-45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool before serving.
